Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey is receiving a new
theatrical re-release. However, the older, more traditional title sequence, is out of style, and the
film needs a contemporary and stylish new title sequence.
The new title sequence needs to convey the tone and general themes
of the film, as well as keep new and returning viewers engaged, and build excitement for the upcoming
film. The title sequence also needs to work for a streaming service adaptation
In order to fulfil these requirements, the project would: make reference to the film, without spoiling
major scenes or dialog, pay homage or make reference to the original film, be generated without the use
of any original footage from the film.
To do this, a blended medium of 2D vector and 3D animation was chosen, to highlight the imagined future
of the film. Then the film was studied to find replicable moments for inclusion in the title sequence.
Next, the sequence was storyboarded, and iteratively improved upon until a timeline was established, and
key scenes could be developed. Assets were developed for these scenes, while a studio render space was
created in Cinema4D.
During the scene development process, a master timeline was created, and set to music, so that as scenes
were completed, they could be added to the project.
